Buy an avocado that isn’t hard as a rock or soft and squishy; let it sit at room temperature in a paper bag for a day or two until it “gives” a little when you press on it. Slice it open, remove the pit, and dice the flesh (watch this video if you need some help). Be careful when you remove the pit from the knife. Add the juice of half a lime (or a lemon), some salt and pepper, some garlic powder and onion powder, and a tablespoon of chopped fresh cilantro or parsley. Taste it, then adjust the seasonings.
Variation: before opening the avocado, saute half of a chopped onion and a clove of minced garlic in olive oil. Let it cool just a bit, then add it to the avocado, lime juice, and cilantro or parsley.
